Monuments
05:02
|
|||
And you came wide eyed with reports
Of hostile forces gaining ground
Said you felt threatened by the night
But you’ll stay and fight, you’ll stay and fight
Up til the starlight takes your life
So pull the cannons to the front, where splintered limbs
Stand their hollow ground
And we will melt our knives and guns, rebuild them
As monuments to our drowned out sound
So I lit every torch I found
But tunnels blind and deaf ran on and on
And I still don’t quite trust the light
But I’ll make a deal, I’ll compromise
As long as the morning keeps its side of the deal
But until then
We’ll pull our cannons to the front, where splintered limbs
Stand their hollow ground
And we will melt our knives and guns, rebuild them
As monuments to our drowned out sound
We still stand our hollow ground

Far Station
05:19
|
|||
Uneven earth is sharp as shells
Slick with kerosene
And industry ignites the hills
Bright red seams
Ice bathed melodies
Tucked in those pages inbetween
Open all wings
To far stations
I remember days of patience
Coalescing into shapes and
Lines reciting invitations
She slept in shipwrecks half her life
Monsters of the deep
Nesting in her mouth and eyes
Bright red seams
But they helped her breathe
So she forgave them all in time
Open all wings
To far stations
I remember days of patience
Coalescing into shapes and
Lines reciting invocations
Like, “Ooo”

Tidal Pool
09:30
|
|||
For a deep, and dank dark year
the currents swam, they ran so far
Then unfurled, and disappeared
underneath dimming stars
Now they sleep in shallow tidepools,
filling in and washing out
Folding soaking rooms around their beds
like empty shells
They said, “Our homes lie miles away
and weeks too late to turn around,
but worn streets that scratch against our feet,
they will give way to untouched ground.
Until then
We still sleep in shallow tidepools,
filling in and washing out
Holding soaking roofs above our heads
like laden clouds
Then filling every room with
the souvenirs from midnight hours
And locking every door and walking north
toward secret towns.”

I met my clone out in the fields
And he seemed skeptical
of which one of us was real
So I tied on my gloves to fight
But stopped just short of looking
him right in the eye
He said,
“If you don’t believe in anything
You got no more right to claim
that anything still makes you and the
ones you love the same.
And now we’re in this open space
with nowhere else to hide
Let’s take this matter
proverbially outside.”
I told him I was deathly tired
That I’d been up all night
To count as many fears as there
were stars and fireflies
I told him it’d been years since I
could last collect my thoughts
But I’d still give him as good as I got
Then I met a girl from way down south
Whose thoughts were
Butterflies that fluttered from her mouth
Their colors swam beneath the bed
And after one or two false starts
They sighed and said,
“We’ve walked together for a thousand miles
At least 10 more still to tread
I wonder will I see you when I
Stumble cross the edge
I wonder if I’ll feel your face
Still warm from the day’s light
Or watch your shadow
Dissolve into the night.”
I told her I was soaking wet
That I’d been caught outside
In thunderous gale and golf ball hail
Wrapped in her hair to hide
Don’t know if I can follow maps
To all the treasures that she sought
But I’ll still give her, as good as I’ve got
I will still give them, as good as I’ve got

They sailed
All around the edges of the map
So they could find some new ways home
But every island turned its back
Seafoam soaked them to the bone
Compass unresponsive
Star charts laid out blank and despondently
But though the waves crash all through time
Lonesome lighthouses still
Shine through constant night
Play faded films of sailors long washed by
And try to guide
Their frozen shipwrecks safely back to life
And they drew
Xs all across the world’s great stages
So they’d know just where to stand
But after dusk they lost their lines
Nightfall foils best laid plans
Counting virtues vices
Smiling while the water rises
But though the curtains fall behind
Actors in spotlights still
Shine through constant night
Blow breathless kisses toward empty seats so high
Bow deeply twice
Pick up forgotten roses one more time

Empires
08:27
|
|||
Riverbeds
On the edge of town
By the homes of lizards
Who lay their heads down
We can unturn every lock
We can make these empires fall away
We can build them back from dust
Dig all through the night and sleep all day
Five flights up bare stairs
Past doorknobs that don’t turn
Where telephones stare
Pale window, pale atmosphere
We can untie every knot
We can make these empires fall away
We can build them back from dust
Dig all through the night and sleep all day
And we can murder every thought
We can make these empires fall away
We can build them back from dust
Dig all through the night and sleep all day
But harsh stones and sharp snow
still fall our way
Harsh stones and sharp snow and
Long morning shadows
still fall our way

Silent Saturn
04:20
|
|||
Our horses strain
But the rocks beneath us won’t give way
The kingdom can be saved!
If we race through the fields like razor blades
But we won’t get there today
It’s a long long wait
And it’s still as far as Silent Saturn
They’re still light years from this place
Just pale blue shapes
Spinning in blank space
Their clear blue voice
Can call us out of this white noise
Pull serpentine
White roses winding through white screens
But we won’t get there today
Cause it’s a long long wait
And it’s still as far as Silent Saturn
We are light years from this place
We are pale blue shapes
Spinning in blank space
